Price Shock Abroad

If you’re an American and you’re planning to come to Australia for a holiday or even possibly to relocate, let this be your warning: EVERYTHING COSTS MORE HERE. Everything from cereal to motorcycle tires carries with it a price tag that’s almost double than what you’d pay back in the US.

It’s no wonder why more Australians are resorting to shopping online. Even my husband buys his motorcycle tires online because it costs LESS to have them shipped from America to Australia than buying them locally. Yes…tires! Curious to know what other things have an outrageous Australian price tag? Thought so. Check out the list of items below.

  1. Gas (or petrol as they call it)
  2. Movie tickets
  3. Groceries
  4. Shoes (oh I miss DSW, T.J. Maxx, and Marshalls!)
  5. Clothing
  6. Dining out (it’s cheaper to cook something at home)
  7. Fast food dining out (you’ll never find a good quality chicken burrito for $4)
  8. Public/street parking
  9. Taxes
  10. Speeding fines/tickets (don’t ask)
  11. Rent (the cost is per week, not per month)
  12. Motorcycle gear (helmet, gloves, etc.) and bike parts
  13. Auto insurance
  14. Real estate
  15. Make-up (my same mascara here costs $18! shame)
  16. Bras/lingerie (stock up at Victoria’s Secret before coming here)
  17. Tennis courts (no such thing as free public courts, you must pay to play per hour)
  18. Hotels (most of which are in dire need of remodelling)
  19. Songs from iTunes
  20. Furniture
